Description

This Fine condition copy of Suzuki Beane has only very very light wear to the bottom of the spine. 1961 first edition is stated on the copyright page. The Near Fine condition dust jacket illustration matches the hardcover. The jacket, with $2.50 price intact on the front flap, has very few minuscule closed tears. This lovely story, told in the voice of Suzuki, is an odyssey of two children: Suzuki from a beatnik family, the other from a wealthy mainstream family. The two become best friends even as they experience the insensitivity, intolerance, and self-righteousness of both sets of parents who reject each other's child and lifestyle. The children run away from home and set off on an archetypal journey that results in a complex, beautifully wrought morality tale. The illustrations by Fitzhugh, who later wrote and illustrated the Harriet the Spy book series, perfectly complement the poetic impact, humor, and pathos of Scoppettone's story. Sometimes considered a satire of Eloise, this book--the first book for the author and the illustrator--presents a story for both children and parents alike.
