Textured white endpapers and pastedowns. Illustrated with a frontispiece, a folding map, several plates, and numerous in-text illustrations (all in black and white). With two letters dated 1896, each addressed to an A. Lawrence Rotelo, Esquire. The first letter is signed off from a Dr. Ellwood E. Hopkins, and discusses a transaction between the two men: the doctor is confirming Rotelo's telegrammed request to purchase two original drawings done aboard The Kite ("Crossing the Arctic Circle" and "Our Aurora Borealis"). The second letter is from May, and only the first page of the letter is present. The second letter discusses the artist's inspiration and method for the drawing, "Crossing the Arctic Circle". The letter-writer even gives the altitude at which he completed the drawing. According to the complete letter, the two pictures were purchased for $350. Arctic Bibliography 8485. With the log of the relief expedition of the Kite, a history of the group's experiences at McCormick Bay, and the results of the trans-Greenland trek. Also with a study of Inuit tools, clothes, and transportation. Some visible wear to the extremities (including light soiling), a bookplate on the front pastedown and the title page starting but securely attached to the gutter.
