Quarto, 291pp., illustrated from photographs. A fine copy in the publisher's bluish-grey cloth with black leather spine and applied design of a falcon, with title and outline in silver, and a red dot in the eye of the falcon. In the publisher's slipcase, a trifle rubbed; still fine. The eleventh book of the press, one of 400 limited unnumbered copies printed on Byron-Weston Linen Record paper, and bound by the Schuberth Bookbindery. A stark and beautiful production. According to the brief essay at the close of the text, entitled "On the Photographs," the publisher wanted to illustrate the edition with "historic photographs of real locations mentioned in the novel, so that the reader might see [San Francisco] as it appeared to the eyes of Sam Spade." (p. 279). For those lovers of this novel who cannot get the images of the immortal 1941 film adaptation by John Huston out of their eyes, this volume may help you to re-calibrate. The Arion Press is widely celebrated for their fine work in book design, and their execution in producing fine limited editions of important works.
